Cooling towers play a significant
role in properties. They can provide a cost-effective way of cooling the spaces
and areas that require specific temperatures. These cooling towers function by utilising
large quantities of water and their components to remove the heat from the
property.

Properties such as manufacturing
facilities, petroleum refineries, and power plants maximise cooling towers in
carrying out their operations. After all, heat can be destructive to the
regular operations and processes of these properties. But for cooling towers to
be truly effective on several industrial buildings, their fill media must be
replaced at some point of their use.

Replacing Fill Media is a Must

The fill media of the cooling tower
is responsible for its cooling action. This component allows air and water to
mix and interact so that the cooling requirements of a property can be
provided. Without efficient fill media, the cooling capabilities of the cooling
tower can be affected negatively.

Just like other cooling tower
components, the quality of fill media may deteriorate as time passes. And at
some point in the cooling tower’s operations, this specific component may get
damaged and become old, reducing its overall effectiveness. With old or damaged
fill media, the heat transfer level of the cooling tower may also decrease
significantly.

Replacing the fill media, therefore,
can grant owners of cooling towers a significant boost on their overall cooling
performance. It can likewise extend the service life of the cooling towers,
save time and money, and obtain maximum output as the cooling towers operate.

Signs of a Damaged Fill Media

Fortunately, there are vital signs
that can confirm the need to replace damaged or old fill media. If you are
currently running cooling towers for your operations, then you need to know the
following signs.

Calcium Build-up: The water used for your cooling
tower often has calcium that can accumulate in the fill during its operations.
And the longer you use the cooling tower, the more calcium your fill media will
obtain. Once the fill media has a calcium build-up, both air and water will
find it difficult to pass through, compromising the overall functionality of
the cooling tower.

Uneven Water Distribution: Somehow related to calcium
build-up, having a clogged or blocked fill media can affect the distribution of
water. Aside from blocking the air from passing through easily, the water
circulation inside your cooling tower may become uneven, reducing its system
performance.

More Energy Usage: The growing issues that are
plaguing the fill media can ultimately lead to a gradual increase in energy
use. Your cooling tower, which has blocked passage of air and uneven
distribution of water, does not have any choice but to use more energy just to
meet the cooling demands of your property. But despite consuming more energy,
the overall cooling capacity of the cooling tower will remain negligible,
providing you with just higher energy bills.

For more information about cooling
towers, just give us a call at Protector Air Care.
The post The Significance of Cooling Tower Fill Media Replacement first appeared on Protector Air Care Pty Ltd.

Numerous residential, commercial,
and industrial facilities maximise the functionalities of heating, ventilation,
and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The main purpose of HVAC systems is to
clear off contaminants in the air and improve both the condition and quality of
the air. They also help in cooling or heating the air so that a building can
obtain a comfortable and healthy environment.

All these primary functions of HVAC
systems can be easily obtained by buildings and properties if they operate
optimally. However, one problem that frequently occurs among HVAC systems is
water leakage. Water leaking from these systems can not only be annoying, but
it can also be alarming as it typically implies more serious problems to the
components of the HVAC systems. Additionally, these leaks can also affect the
condition and performance of the whole building.

To date, there are 4 primary reasons
why water leaking occurs from the HVAC system.

Clogged Drain Line

One of the most common reasons why
water leaks in HVAC systems are because of the clogging on drain lines. Any
dirt, dust, rust, and other debris that may have accumulated on the drain line
over time can easily clog it, which subsequently causes an overflow in the
drain pan. Furthermore, having a clogged drain line can instigate an
accumulation of condensed moisture within the duct system and around the vent.
This accumulation will then cause the water to drip out.

Broken Condensate Pump

HVAC systems that are equipped with
a condensate drain pump can effectively remove the water that comes from the
dehumidification and condensation processes throughout the building. However,
if this specific pump becomes faulty, the water that comes from the building
cannot be pumped away anymore. The lack of pumping activity will then force the
water to accumulate inside the system and eventually overflow, which might
damage some parts of the HVAC system.

Poor Ductwork Insulation

Insulation is crucial to the
ductwork as it prevents contact between cold and hot elements. So, if the
ductwork does not have efficient insulation, then the cool air from the
surroundings may get into contact with the warm duct. The contact between these
elements will then cause the formation of excess condensation within the HVAC
units, leading to leaks in various parts of the system and from the vent. Poor
ductwork insulation can likewise cause mould, mildew, dry rot, and
microorganisms to grow.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Another reason why water might leak
from the HVAC system is because of a frozen evaporator coil. This specific part
of the HVAC system is expected to freeze up if the units of this system have
low levels of refrigerant and dirty air filters. The condensation located on
the evaporator coil can freeze up once the warm air from a specific space moves
through the HVAC system. Once the HVAC is turned off, the ice that was formed
from this contact will start to melt, which makes the water drip out. Clogged
air filters, alternatively, can likewise freeze up the evaporator coil since
airflow is blocked.

Cooling
towers represent an incredibly elegant solution to an age-old problem. The tech
behind these temperature-managing constructs basically scales-up a natural
process. Based on nature’s own heat exchanger mechanism, the principles at work
inside the towers can be found everywhere. However, these evaporative systems
have evolved to encompass many additional features, many of which assure an
environmentally safe air stream. What then happens if a cooling tower fails?

Troubleshooting Temperature
Fluctuations

The
following faults are troubling, but things could be worse, as we’ll highlight
in a later passage of text. A cooling tower fails because its evaporative
mechanism breaks down. The evaporative water flow begins to warm. As a knock-on
effect, the air flowing through the structure warms too. Odds are the heat
exchanger isn’t working properly. The air that initially cools the water is
obstructed or low-flowing. Adjust the intake blades to correct the flow rate.
Another problem here is the water level. Obstructed by a clogged filter or a
jammed actuator, the water level rises too high. Because of the rise, the
sprinkler temperature fluctuates. Filter jams and/or actuator seizures impact
water or air flows. When those flows change unexpectedly, the functions of the
heat exchanger are impinged, too. When troubleshooting cooling tower failures,
those that impact temperature management performance, flow rates, leaks,
blockages, and parts failures are viewed as everyday culprits.

All About the Health Endangering
Hazards

At least a
repair engineer knows where to look when a performance hit strikes. Elsewhere,
suffering from a progressive failure, the equipment will keep on working, but
at what cost? Drift eliminators, which are designed to reduce aerosolized
losses, can fail. Misaligned or broken, the “drift” escapes as a wet
stream. Imagine that wet load combining with concealed tower scale or some
stubborn bacterial growth. With the damp conditions concealed inside the tower,
the air quality begins to affect the weakened immune system of a child or
elderly person. Those drift eliminators cannot fail. They must be maintained.
By the way, talking of “health conditions,” we’re not limiting that
term to people.

Remember, cooling towers are used to regulate the functions of all kinds of
structures. In occupied places, they do cool people; that statement is true
enough. But, importantly, those structures also keep power stations and all
sorts of heat-producing industrial processes cool. If a failure occurs, a
controlled system, one that processes industrial-grade energies, could kick out
ungovernable amounts of thermal energy. That’s a dangerous situation. If a
motor fails, or a bearing breaks, or maybe a sprinkler system experiences a
blockage, building managers can’t work blindly. In this scenario, cooling
towers have real-time monitors, which act as system failure safeguards.
The post Reasons Why Cooling Towers Fail first appeared on Protector Air Care Pty Ltd.
