Understanding the Working Principles of HVAC Filtering Units

10 May 2021

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are designed to effectively improve the atmospheric condition of a property, particularly in rooms and areas that are often used by many people. These systems are typically utilised in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

One primary function of HVAC systems is that they can control the temperature of a room or an area. Another function of these systems is that they can regulate the humidity level of these places by controlling the distribution and movement of the air. But one function of these systems that property owners often overlook is that they can filter and purify the air.

Filter Function of HVAC Systems

HVAC systems can truly make properties much more relaxing and comfortable given that they can regulate and control both the temperature and humidity. But as mentioned, they can also carry out the filter functionality thanks to their accompanying filtering units.

The filtering units of HVAC systems are often seen on several areas of a property, with most of them featuring fibres or other types of pleated materials in a sturdy frame. These components work by cleaning the air that is being circulated by the HVAC system. Most particulates and contaminants on the air such as dust, dirt, pollen, mould spores, fibres, lint, hair, and microorganisms are being trapped by the units’ pleated materials, making sure that the air will not be transferring them around the property.

Most particulates and contaminants can be trapped by the pleated materials given that their surfaces are folded over onto themselves. Additionally, these units often have very large surface areas, which makes it possible for them to ensure the cleanliness of the air.

HVAC Filtering Units Efficiency

While most types of HVAC filtering units can perform basic filtration, they still have some notable differences when it comes to their filtering efficiency. Standard filters can provide a basic level of filtration at a very affordable price. Alternatively, other filtering units are made of pleated cloth or paper, which can already be optimal for residential properties.

Mid-range filtering units, on the other hand, can effectively trap and capture particles of 1 micron or larger. Ultimately, high-efficiency filtering units can capture particles of 0.3 microns or larger, which can be effective in properties that carry out many operations. While filtering units that have thick and dense structure can be very effective in purifying the air, they are often avoided by some properties as they can reduce the effectiveness of the HVAC systems when it comes to heating and cooling processes.

But to ensure the efficiency of these filtering units, they must be cleaned and maintained regularly. Without conducting these activities, it may affect the overall performance of the HVAC systems. Contaminants may likewise spread around the property, which may lead to sickness and other issues.
